About PD
Home Economics Victoria offers a broad ranging professional development programs for teachers of Home Economics, Technology and Health Education throughout metropolitan and country Victoria. Activities range from one hour workshops to half-day sessions to full-day conferences. The professional development calendar is compiled by our Professional Development Officer and is developed with input from the members, staff and Directors of the Association. All programs are evaluated to ensure the ongoing relevance in meeting the needs of teachers.

Home Economics Victoria: Registered Training Organisation
21868VIC Vocational Graduate Diploma of Home Economics Education
Home Economics Victoria is pleased to announce another intake for the Vocational Graduate Diploma in Home Economics Education will commence in February 2009. The course has been accredited by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and endorsed by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as meeting the Specialist Area Guidelines for the teaching of home economics and health (including human development). The course will provide already qualified teachers with the opportunity to add home economics teaching qualifications. It will also qualify as an eligible fourth year of study for three-year trained teachers. The cost for individual units is $825 per unit. Home Economics Victoria is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Provider Number 21603. Home Economics Victoria is now registered to deliver Certificate II Hospitality (Operations) THH21802 that can support the needs of teachers delivering VET hospitality in schools.
To deliver and assess units from the Certificate II Hospitality (Operations) THH21802 for VET Hospitality in schools teachers must:
Training must be delivered by a person who holds TAA40104 - Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from the (TAA04) Training and Assessment Training Package, or can demonstrate equivalent competencies.
TAA40104 applied from the 24 November 2005 for any new trainers. For those who hold BSZ40198 - Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training from the (BSZ98) Training Package ‘Assessment and Workplace Training’, this will also be accepted as equivalent for the purposes of this standard.
Assessment must be conducted by a person who has the following competencies from the TAA04 Training and Assessment Training Package:
- TAAASS401A Plan and organise assessment;
- TAAASS402A Assess competence;
- TAAASS404A Participate in assessment validation
Assessment can be conducted by those who hold the equivalent units (BSZ401A Plan assessment, BSZ402A Conduct assessment, and BSZ403A Review assessment).
The person must also be able to demonstrate vocational competencies, at least to the level of those being delivered and assessed.
As VCE VET Hospitality units are at Certificate II level (Certificate II in Hospitality (Operations) THH21802), you need to be able to demonstrate vocational competencies confirmed by an appropriate qualification, or a Statement of Attainment for the relevant units of competency you are delivering and assessing.
In the Hospitality Training Package demonstrated vocational competencies usually includes three (3) years recent and relevant industry experience.
Finally, it is strongly recommended that the person involved in training and assessing VET Hospitality also undertakes the Hospitality Industry Update Program every 2 years to gain a Certificate of Industry Recognition from Service Skills Victoria and therefore ensure currency with industry practices. Service Skills Victoria is now operating this program with Home Economics Victoria in place of the AHRP Industry recognition, which is no longer being auspiced by SSV.
Introduction to Hospitality Course August 2008
Introduction to Hospitality is an industry endorsed training program which consists of the five core units of competence from the hospitality training package and is specifically designed for secondary teachers.
The Introduction to Hospitality Program is developed in consultation with the Hospitality Industry Professional Development Committee (managed by Service Skills Victoria) to ensure that the content is industry relevant and meets industry standards. The programs are reviewed annually by the committee and a continuous improvement process is undertaken regularly by SSV and Home Economics Victoria. Recognition is provided on the certificates received at the completion of the programs that are industry recognised programs.

Annual Conference
The Home Economics Victoria Annual Conference provides something for everyone and is an opportunity for like-minded professionals to come together. The 2007 Annual Conference was held on Monday 26 November 2007 with 400+ participants in attendance. The 2008 Annual Conference will be held on Monday 1 December 2008. A conference flyer will be posted here in September 2008.
